Visitor Centre Modra špilja – Biševo

Centar za posjetitelje

The town of Komiža partnered with public institution Sea and Karst, Blue World Institute and the Tourist Board of Komiža to implement the project „Visitor Centre Modra špilja – Biševo“ in line with the Grant Agreement signed with the Ministry of Regional Development and European Funds and the Central Finance and Contracting Agency.

The main goal of the project is to reconstruct the building of the old Biševo school and to turn it into the Visitor Centre, as well as to arrange the educational-thematic trails that will help the preservation of natural heritage and the promotion of the new tourist brand.

Within the scope of infrastructure activities at the site of the ruined building of the former school in Biševo, Visitor Centre is being set up, featuring polyvalent spaces for interpretation and presentation of the natural heritage of Biševo island and the Vis archipelago (exhibition hall, info desk, smaller lecture hall, souvenir shop), as well as  offices for a volunteer and research centre, catering facilities and accommodation for employees.  Also, the educational trails for pedestrians and cyclists connecting the Visitor Centre with Mezoporat, Porat, Gatula, Salbunara and the Stražbenica hill were arranged; coastal artillery batteries at Cape Gatula were renewed and illuminated, comprising rest areas for visitors and information panels featuring topics related to the natural heritage of Biševo.

In addition to the infrastructure activities, the study on the Valorisation of the Natural Heritage of Biševo island was carried out with the proposals for educational and informative content, the action plan for managing visitors, the study on Blue Cave capacity, the branding strategy, as well as the strategic marketing and action plan. The website of the Centre is currently under construction, as well as the mobile application; we plan to organise promotional activities and educational workshops to mark the opening of the Centre. It is expected that the Centre would open before the beginning of the tourist season of 2022.

The overall objective of the Project is to contribute to the economic and social development of Biševo and Vis islands, as well as to improve the quality of life of local population through the sustainable use of natural heritage.  The implementation of the Project will create the preconditions for achieving the specific objectives of the Project:

increasing the attractiveness of Biševo and Vis islands with the interpretation of natural heritage

increasing the economic activity

increasing the educational capacity and public awareness level on sustainable development in order to preserve the natural heritage.

The total value of the project is HRK 27,130,650.97, and the EU contribution to the project financing is HRK 18,470,061.85.

The project is being implemented in the period from 13 December 2016 to 31 December 2021.

The project was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund.
